Luminance Contrast Calculator
The purpose of the luminance contrast requirements in the NS 11001-1 , NS 11001- 2 and in the Norwegian legislation is to secure that buildings are Universal Designed, which again means that it should be easy to find and identify spatial elements and to move safely in them. To be able to use unfamiliar areas effectively, safe and independent, the user has to be able to collect the necessary information from the physical environment. Getting the LRV values of the materials is ofet a given in the technical brochures or evaluated with an affordable color scanner. To assist architectural offices with the evaluation of the luminance/lightness contrast we prepared an application to calculate it using the Weber’s formula. It is also possible to calculate the necessary background or foreground values in order to fulfill the 40% or 80% contrast required by the Norwegian legislation, given the LRV of one material. That application is free and available for Windows and can be downloaded here.
