Link IFC Pro brings IFC files into the current Revit project through a guided linking workflow. It helps you inspect the IFC header, choose the placement method, and control whether an existing link should be replaced.
Use it when an IFC model needs to be linked into a Revit project with more predictable positioning and better visibility into the file metadata before import.
Getting started
Overview
The tool focuses on linking, not converting or editing IFC geometry manually. The typical process is to select the IFC file, review its header information, choose the placement mode, and then create or replace the Revit link.
The link workflow is intended for project documents, so family files are not the right place to use this command.
Requirements
- A supported Revit project with Link IFC Pro installed.
- A saved Revit project document, not a family file.
- An accessible IFC file and any shared-folder path your team uses for stored settings.
Install and uninstall
Deploying to multiple machines? This section covers standard local installation. For automated deployment by IT administrators or BIM managers, see the Silent Installer Guide.
Install
- Close Revit.
- Run the Link IFC Pro installer with administrator rights.
- Complete the installer steps.
- Start Revit and confirm the command is available on the ribbon.
Uninstall
- Close Revit.
- Use the Windows uninstall entry for Link IFC Pro.
- Confirm removal and reopen Revit only after the process completes.
Uninstalling the add-in does not remove IFC links that are already stored in project files.
Link workflow
Select the IFC file
- Save the Revit project before you begin.
- Open Link IFC Pro from the ribbon.
- Browse to the IFC file that should be linked.
- Review the file name and schema information before continuing.
Choose the placement mode
Link IFC Pro supports several placement methods, including internal, base point, and survey point workflows. Choose the option that matches the incoming model and the coordination rule for the project.
- Internal: Use when the IFC should align to the project's internal origin strategy.
- Base Point: Use when the project base point is the required coordination reference.
- Survey Point: Use when a survey-based reference is part of the shared positioning workflow.
Replace or overwrite an existing link
If the model has already been linked once, Link IFC Pro can reuse that workflow and replace the previous reference when the overwrite option is enabled.
Settings and behavior
Saved preferences
The add-in remembers placement choices, overwrite behavior, and selected shared-folder paths. This reduces repeat setup, but the remembered values should still be checked whenever a different project uses another positioning standard.
Document save behavior
The workflow can attempt to save the current document before linking when a saved path already exists. That helps the project keep a consistent reference state before the link is created.
Troubleshooting and FAQ
The command will not run in the current file
Cause: The current file is a family document.
Fix: Open a project document and run the command there instead.
The linked model is placed incorrectly
Cause: The wrong placement mode was selected for the incoming IFC and project reference system.
Fix: Recheck whether the file should be aligned by internal origin, base point, or survey point, then relink with the correct option.
The IFC header information looks unfamiliar
Cause: The file was exported from a different authoring workflow than expected.
Fix: Review the schema and file metadata before linking so the right positioning choice can be made.
Can I update an existing IFC link instead of creating a new one?
Yes. Enable the overwrite or replace behavior when you want the existing linked reference to be refreshed instead of creating another separate link.
